Engine overhead - guardian kicking in

Recommended Posts

I'm getting a little good at taking this water pump off. The cover is sitting in front of me on my coffee table.

Haha, I've washed Kawasaki cylinder heads in my dishwasher before

You can see the water flow from the water pump only. You can then see the water flow from the exhaust. The exhaust output is pretty dismal compared to Dura's.

wait on the sanding I would put some waterproof grease. then see if you have a better water flow.

Have you checked to see if the new impeller is spinning on the hub (what it slides on)? This will occur more often at high speeds hanging it up... That is poor pressure.. Horrible actually...

I did... that was one of the first things I checked.

100, 320, then 600 wet sanded it. It feels pretty smooth. I'll install it tomorrow morning and see how the water pressure turns out.

When I replaced the impeller, I noticed the grooves on the brass housing.

The grooves look fairly small but I'm wondering at lower speeds, there's just not enough water pressure. Thinking back, when I had the hose off the transmission, water did come out but I didn't leave it on very long to see how well it does.

If it wasn't going to rain today, I'd take the boat back out again. I never had a problem with it when using a garden hose but I wonder if the house water pressure is assisting the water pump.

So this is the before

And this was about the mid way point.

It's fixed!!

I reinstalled the pump this morning. Greased the surface and o-ring.

As you can see in the video, I left the garden hose on to keep the bucket filled. Turned on the engine, went to the exhaust and you can see Niagra falls coming out. I came back to the bucket and it was empty.. sucking in air. That didn't even take more than 20 or so seconds to empty a 5 gallon bucket.

Without a doubt, the grooves made a huge difference.

I would recommend sanding down the face if you see grooves probably each time you replace the impeller. Or, buy a new cover that has a stainless steel wear plate. Or buy an aftermarket stainless steel wear plate.

Thanks!

FYI, a new cover is about $100 with shipping. I saw on other threads that the new covers are composite material with a stainless steel wear plate.

Or $5 for sand paper.

I'm really stoked.. hopefully take it out to the lake this afternoon or tomorrow.
