cup holder and speaker ring LED install

He is my test ring, it's come out much better than I could plan. I cut slits on the side I designated as the inside, this allows for much easier molding and captures light in the rod (the blue tape is to guide my while cutting down the rod). Then I put the rod in the oven at 300*F. After like 8 mins, I wrapped it around a big cup that looks to be about the size of our cup holders, but I think it's a bit bigger. I held the ring there for about one minute, and then had someone else splash cold water on the counter and down the sides if the cup while I held the ring with my mittens. All I gotta do is get some reflective tape for the inside and to wrap the actual LEDs in the ends, and some heat-shrink. I should have everything done by Friday or Saturday. No rev10 lights, but the speakers will be installed this weekend also!

Here is the clear trial ring. I am putting the frosted one together now, and expect the final products to be much brighter because all I have sitting around is yellow lights. That's what I have extra from previous projects. The kinda funky shapes on it are just from the tape that I used to hold the tin foil on (redneck reflector tape). I am buying real reflection tape to put on the inside so that all the light will shine outward.

Here is what the final rings will look like without lights. The previously posted rings looked terrible compared the these, in person they look really good, I'm putting twice the number of slits in the backside though, it is easy to distinct where the slits are. I just want a simple low around the edge, and I'm predicting they'll look even better under the lip of the Cupholder. I still haven't decided on frosted or clear, will be putting them side by side when they're both completed with the same foil tape. post-3334-0-12219500-1369318946_thumb.jpg

The actual rings turned out much better than the test runs did. I decided to put the foil tape on the actual cup holder. The rings are beautiful, only thing I wish I would have done different is cut more inserts on the inside. I cut them prior to shaping them. So here they are, constructive criticism accepted.

Honestly???? I do not like seeing the cuts all the way around them. They also look like they sit pretty high from the ring... Other than that, they are sweet!

Fair enough, I was thinkin about sanding the inside of the rings with 500 grit sandpaper, to kind of get the more glowing effect. The rings are 1/2" thick, that was recommended. I wish I went with 7/16" or 3/8".

I know this is an old topic, but I just finished and thought I would post my photos and what I used. I did use LEDs off of ebay and taped them to the cup holder. For the ring I bought 1/4 frosted tube $4.50 from Home Depot (water line to refrigerator ) and used 3/4 aluminum dowel cut to 1in to attach tube. Looks great let me know what you guys think. I also added some blue to my moms Bayliner
