2002 Avy Stereo upgrade

Recommended Posts

RhuntIII    555

I will be replacing my inboat speakers, head unit and possibly one of my amps.

I have purchased a 10" Rockford sub that I plan on reusing.

Woofer Series: Prime R2 Shallow (R2SD4-10)

Nominal Impedance (ea): 2-Ohm

Internally wired to create a 2-Ohm amplifier load

Power Handling: 200 Watts RMS

400 Watts MAX

What product do you wish to use for your upgrades Rhunt? Also which amp are you possibly going to ditch and which amps are you keeping? Give a run down of current set up model numbers please for everyone.

My first questions are.

An amp that will power that sub with the ability to power four in boat speakers?

I think I have 4-6.5" speakers now.

Y'alls opinions on head units?

I have a standard size head unit under a plastic face plate. I would like to stay with that size and set up.

I'm not sure on sizing amps with speakers.

I'll be posting photos as soon as I start the tear down.

I'll do that as soon as I get to the boat.

I'll decide on the amps once I post both. I'm sure It will be the weakest of the two.

As far as products I don't know, I'm hoping that's were you guys come in. ;)

Arc XDi-805 Full-Range Class-D 5 chnl amp. 75W x 4 @ 4 ohm to your 4 in-boats and will easily handle a 3rd pair. This is solid power for any typical 6.5" in-boat. 400W x 1 to your 2 Ohm sub. Small, light weight, efficient. A 5 chnl is a great option due to your 2 ohm sub. A typical 5 chnl will allow for you to adequately power you 2 ohm sub and in-boats as its 2 amps in one chassis. other wise, you are looking at 2 amp, as very few options that will handle a 2 ohm load bridged.

In-boats: [standard] Kicker KM6200 (available with blue LEDs), Wet Sounds 65 series or Alpine SPSM600. [Premium] Kicker KM6250.2, Wet Sounds 650 series or JL M650

Head-units: Take you pick based on price, looks and features.

Alpine CDA9886M

Clarion - any one of the "M" series

Sony CDXM60UI with CD or DSX-MS60 with "Tune--Tray"

Kenwood

All have most of the typical features and all support remotes.

Another option for your amp choice would be the JL M700/5. 75W x 4 and 300W to your 2 ohm sub.

Wylie given some great options personally I got the JL 7.7 and bump the boat great you will have to drill holes for the tweets and cut the woofer hole bigger but well worth the effort in the end and I'm running a alpine pdx 150x4 with my in boat set up I can still hear the music low but clearly at surf range with tower speakers off

Also I know ya run in salt, do you personally prefer the head unit to be "marine"? Or are you fine with a car unit? Would you like to run a transom remote?

Do you personally prefer "marine" or car amps?

I assume you most definitly want "marine" interiors as this is where I wouldn't skimp at all ;)

I would like to go with all marine grade, subs mounted under observation seat, as far as a price lets try to stay in the middle. I am open minded about all price ranges. Another thing I would like to do is turn off the tower speakers and just listen to the in boats.

In regards to marine-grade. I am more comfortable with an automotive amp in a boat, then I am using an off the shelf automotive trunk liner covered MDF box. If you want to retain that 10", I would consider building a plywood box thats sealed. At a minimum, pull the trunk liner and sub, and seal it inside and out as some might suggest. Either way, a box needs to be lifted off the floor by poly feet.

So, the only thing staying on at this point is the tower speakers and maybe one amp. Answer me this about those tower speaker pods. Is there a set of speaker wire binding posts for each individual pod?
