Surf Style on the Left and Skim Style on the Right (give or take they are to scale)

gallery_66_113_2053.jpg

Surf: [pictured 5 feet/60 inches long] Thicker 2 plus inches plus more like a true ocean style surfboard, better for air tricks, propelled by surf style fins, can be a single fin, twin fin, tri-fin or quad fin set up.

Skim: [pictured 4 foot-6 inches/54 inches long] Thinner around 1 inch more like beach type skim board, better for surface tricks, propelled by edging the board and a small fin in the middle to make the board more stable when flat on the water.

Since some tricks are easier on one style board than the other the styles Skim and Surf are seperated.

Skim example: the skim style board is smaller and easier to do tricks like a shuvet than on a surf style. See video below.

Surf example: the surf style board is longer, uses larger fins to propel it, giving the rider speed needed for boosting larger airs than most skim style rigers.

Below are some general FAQ's about the 2010 World Wakesurfing Championships

Can I ride in more than one division?

No.

Can I ride in Surf & Skim?

No.

How much riding time can I expect?

If you are an amateur or master you will have practice riding on Thursday for course and wave familiarity, speed settings, river current adjustments and competition on Friday. If you are a pro, you can expect Thursday Practice, Friday qualifying and if qualified, the finals on Sunday.

What kind of Boats are we riding behind?

2011 Centurion SV240 Enzo without Switchblade, custom ballast.

How much does it cost? What do I get?

$100.00 buys your entry & insurance, competitor kit and water time.

How do I know what division? Surf or Skim?

Usually your equipment will determine your style, at least to a degree. Judges will determine if someone is in the incorrect division or class and make the heat scoring adjustments. Typically the Surf style classes will feature riders demonstrating Surf style arrangements, snaps, carves, ollies, aerials, limited spin capabilities. The Skim style riding judges will look for traditional skim style riding, more surface oriented (not balance) tricks like advanced spins & shuvits. See the judging criteria highlights for example. The trick list is a guide, NOT a SCORE system and do not feel intimidated, it is a vague by design.

How many falls do I get?

Essentially 3 in each direction, two falls on your first pass and you will be picked up to the end of the course. Your 3rd fall in either direction is the end of your ride.

What are the prizes? How much cash?

There are no details revealed on product, assurance that it is the largest Worlds purse ever and the biggest prizes ever in Wakesurf History.

Is the event broadcasted?

Over the air to the shore as well as live on the internet.

Can I listen to music when I ride?

Only with earphones, boat stereos will not be used.

Can I ship my board to you?

No, you can coordinate delivery with your hotel.

Can I change my fins/board after qualifying?

No, judges will review equipment

Can I bring my boat to watch from the water?

Yes, compliance with all city, county and coast guard rules enforced outside of the tournament.

How long is the run/pass/session?

60 Second @ 12MPH each way.

Can I substitute riders or make modifications?

No.

Are there refunds on registration?

No.

Can you hold my spot?

No.

Can I surf without a life vest?

No, judges will review equipment, USCGA/NCGA vests.

Can I paddle In?

No.

Can I take pictures?

From the shore.

Can my Mom, Friends, etc ride in the boat?

No.

Can I deck launch?

No.

Can I surf into the boat at session close?

No, this results in disqualification.

Are there limits on fin counts our placement?

No, judges will analyze equipment to ensure an unfair advantage has not been permitted in given divisions/classes.

What if I'm late?

You miss your turn.

Can I use wax over traction?

Yes, strapped traction decks are not permitted.

Can I park my truck or boat on site?

No. All parked vehicles are considered advertisement and accounted for.

Can I adjust my speed?

Yes, set your speed quick and fast when you get up. One speed change/set per direction.

What if I feel robbed, or cheated by the scoring?

Bring it staff attention, judges will discuss and head judge will align on concerns.

Is there a published tricklist or scoring sheet?

No.

What if I do tricks that are not on the tricklist or scoresheet?

The judges are trained and will score appropriately. Additionally, you cannot see the scoresheet so do your best, most innovating trick.

There is no published trick list for the 2010 World Wakesurf Championships.

There are many questions on judging criteria for 2010. The notes below should help clear up some questions on what judges are looking for. We will not release points or style merits to provide further details. There is selective scoring and all judges are trained and instructed on how to score for items not on the official trick list and style or emphasis applied.

The #1 item for competitors to note per the judges is to STAY BUSY. You have a finite amount of time for your session is both directions and you want to be busy and getting it done thru your entire run.

In the divisions the judges are looking at the following (tiered scoring)

THIS IS NOT A TRICK LIST, A REFERENCE, IT IS VAGUE BY DESIGN

"A surfer must perform radical controlled maneuvers in the critical section of a wake with Speed, Power and Flow to maximize scoring potential. Innovative / Progressive surfing as well as Variety of maneuvers), will be taken into consideration when rewarding points for waves ridden. The surfer who executes this criteria with the maximum Degree of Difficulty and Commitment on the wakes shall be rewarded with the higher scores."

1. RADICAL CONTROLLED MANEUVERS:

This is by far the MOST IMPORTANT PART OF THE CRITERIA. Contemporary maneuvers basically constitute change of direction of the board on the wake as well as the surfer on the board). Such maneuvers would include re-entries, cut backs, floaters, aerials, etc. How radical they are, followed by the amount of control and commitment put into each of them, will determine how high they will score. POWER COMMITMENT CONTROL. IT IS IMPORTANT TO NOTE: EVEN IF A SURFER HAS COMPLETED 90% OF A MANEUVER, IT WILL NOT SCORE IF HE LOSES CONTROL AND FALLS!

2. MOST CRITICAL SECTION:

This part of the Criteria describes the positions on the wake maneuvers should be performed to score the maximum points.

THE CRITICAL SECTION OF THE WAKE IS THE "POCKET", CLOSEST TO THE CURL.

The degree of commitment and risk involved in performing a maneuver close to the curl is the reason that it scores higher.

Surfers must perform to the Judging Key Concepts to maximize their scoring potential.

Judges analyze the following major concepts when scoring waves:

- Commitment and Degree of Difficulty

- Combination of Major Maneuvers
