drain pump install/location?

I got my ballast system up and running. But the johnson/mayfair 1000gph pumps have that long shaft on them and when you screw it into the bag, and use it to empty it will only empty 3/4 of the bag and then as the bag shrinks that shaft points up and no longer sucks water out.

 

do you guys have your pumps screwed into the bag, or do you have them mounted lower than the bag?

I cut my long shafts down to about 1.5-2" and screwed them back into the bags.

 

Other peeps have run a line to a pump on the other side of the engine divider to drain.
