2008 Enzo 240 Impeller Change - Black Scorpion

I posted pic's on Facebook, because I'm not "premium": http://www.facebook....62&l=fdcc7b6644

  1. Take off the two nuts holding the fuel filter/pump assembly. Lay it aside out of the way; don't remove the hoses.
  2. Use a deep socket to remove one nut and one bolt through the mounting bracket.
  3. Wriggle the seawater pump out of there. It'll feel tight like the exhaust hose is in the way; be persistent.
  4. Once it's out on the bench, three bolts to remove the bracket.
  5. Then the other bolts to remove the cover.
  6. Undersized channel locks to remove the old impeller. It's tuff, you can't really hurt it, and you're going to change it anyway.
  7. Lube up the new one a little bit (vaselline is fine). I then use the palm of my hand and a downward twisting motion (should have taken a picture of that) to shove the impeller in. It always works.
  8. Make sure your o-ring is good and put it all back together.
  9. Before you put it back in, now is a super-good time to lube the rudder stuffing box. Mine has two zerks: upper and lower.
  10. Wriggle it back in, and reassemble.
  11. Don't forget the rigid bushings on the fuel pump/filter assembly. My fuel lines ran between the water hoses on pump.
  12. Remember the belt is snug not tight; you'll hose the seawater pump shaft if there's too much belt tension, and last time I checked it was like $350 for that pump.

I always check it in the driveway before the lake. I installed a T with a hose valve right before the v-drive (used to be an elbow). Then I hook up with a female-to-female hose (like you use for a washing machine). This way the water pressure from the hose drains on the driveway and it's a true test of the suction of the impeller. Trust me, once the motor starts (assuming good impeller), not much water drains out on the driveway - it's sucking it to the seawater pump. - I'll take a picture of that too.

Globe Blue impeller failed after less than 5 hours. Spun the shaft inside the hub. I'll attach pics. I'll send it back and get a replacement, but at this point it will be a spare. I can't trust it now. Apparently this isn't uncommon: http://www.capedory....32768=

The engine got hot as I put it on the trailer. No damage (let's pray). I figured I had sucked up some debris as there's a lot with how high the water is this year. A spun hub is tricky to diagnose BTW. Here you have it:

Why I stay with stock MerCruiser parts on my boat. Globe has no dog in the fight to keep you happy. MerCruiser's reputation is on the line so they are going to make the best parts available.

CenturionSkier- good point. I was intrigued by the ability to "run dry" for a short period of time; I have kids.

I spoke with the distributor today, apparently these used to have brass hubs, but not any longer. Now they fail on the HO/HP motors like the Black Scorpion. They're going to refund my money. I'll go get the OEM part at lunchtime today.

The good news is it only took me ten minutes to pull out the pump and take the impeller out. I'm getting good at this... oh wait, that's not why I bought the damn boat in the first place is it? Oh well, glad it happened as I was loading it on the trailer, and a week before we leave for Lake Powell.
