Pretty bummed

Recommended Posts

Well I received a call stating that the huge grass fires that are all around Possum Kingdom Lake are approximtaely 1/2 a mile south of my lake house, and headed north. I am pretty bummed out right now. I have been trying for two days to go get all of my valuable items out, but all of the roads are closed by Texas DPS and they are not letting anyone in. When I got the call I was told they didn't have any firemen to send to that area and they were all tied up in other areas. Not sure how things are going there, but feel pretty hopeless. So far over 50,000 acres have burned and they have no idea when they will be able to stop them. Last I heard there had been 18 homes, and 2 churches already burned down. They are now evacuating all houses around the lake. My cousin and my best friend are both paid firemen from the metroplex that have been sent to help out with the volunteers in that area too. I guess one good thing is my boat is at my house right now and not out there.

That sucks...Good Luck...we were between Houston and Brenham over the weekend at Lake Somerville, it is amazing how dry and brown eveything is, over the course of the last couple of weeks on the way to the lake we have been watching pond/small lae dry up, it has dropped a couple of feet every week.

I will think some good thoughts about sending some of our rain your way. It just won't stop raining/snowing here! We are under several flood watches/warnings today and tomorrow! There is rain in the forecast 8 out of the next 10 days!!! I hope some of it finds its way to your area and helps the situation there! Hope it all works out and they can save your lake house!!!

Thanks for the well wishes, I have not heard one thing one way or the other in reference to my lake house, but sadly it is being reported that all of the houses in the world famous Hell's Gate area are gone. The fire has now burned over 63,000 acres and unknown how many structures. This is truely sad. Those were some of the nicest houses you can imagine. The lake may never be the same. There is now 1300 fire figheters from 34 different states helping fight the blaze. They say the fire is only about 20% contained at this time. There is rain in the forecast for Thursday and Friday, and they say there is no way to put the fires out, only hope to minimize the loss until the rain hits.

Having been a volunteer fireman myself for over ten years I sit here in my office feeling helpless. I know the firemen are working 15 hour shifts in 95 degree weather and trying to sleep two or three hours at a time. I ask that you keep them and their families (who they are going to be away from for at least two weeks) in your thoughts and prayers. The homes can be replaced, but I sure hope they all stay safe. One volunteer fireman lost his life, and four others were injured last week battling the wild fires, and I pray that no one else is injured.

The fire Boo mentioned is only 1 of the 5 or 6 that are currently burning in TX at the moment. We are having a dry year with a lot of wind (20-30mph). Last I heard these fire have burned north of 1M acres. If we dont get some rain soon, these fires will star burning down a lot of residential housing.

Well guys after I made these posts, I sat in my office for about 30 more minutes, then marched into my supervisors office and told him I was leaving and heading out to fight fires. He didnt argue, so I called my fire chief, got my bunker gear and met up with the guys that were already out there. All I can say is WOW. I have seen lots of fires in my time, but nothing that could compare to this. So far there has been 149 confirmed structures lost. The fire is currently larger than Rhode Island. We have had lots of supplies delivered by people to help us out in our effort, and for that I am thankful. We have the fire 35% contained as of now. It just now started raining(storming), so I had time to stop and update. Now I hope it rains enough to finish putting out the fires. Now off to sleep as I have only had about 3 hours since I got here.

Boo..sorry to hear about your loss. Hopefully the fires are almost contained after last nights storms.

These fires have been crazy. The wildcat fire came within 10 mile of the San Angelo city limits last Friday. Schools were canceled for almost half of this week in some of the surrounding communities (Grape Creek and Robert Lee). One of my project managers is on the Blackwell Volunteer Fire Dept and sent me these pictures from the Ft. Davis fire.
