Wow. Didn't realize that would be such a pain!

I have only 80 hours on mine so far, so I'll let it wait until next year.

Changing the impeller on my Malibu Sportster direct drive was a 3-5 minute ordeal.

LOL

Sounds like I'll be changing mine with a swipe of the debit card as well.

:yes

I'll take a look this weekend.

Sometimes if I look at the problem long enough, I can talk myself into paying somebody to do it.

:fun:

Fropappy,

It's really not as bad as it looks, did mine for the first time last year only took about an hour. Suprising since they quoted me 3 hrs labor to change it....

It sure isn't the easiest impeller to change but I did mine the first time in about 1 hr and 20 minutes. Would possibly be closer to one hour on the next one. I usually buy everything for my boat online except the impeller. It is a very common Mercruiser impeller and can usually be bought at a dealer for about the same price since you don't have to pay shipping. Also one of the best reasons to ditch the factory hard tanks and install bags!!

Did my first impeller today........it sucked LOL

Biggest hassle was putting the hoses back on and having to deal with that fuel assembly bracket chewing me up. If I was 50lbs lighter it would of been so much better

I should have replaced it last year or before my first outing this year.

I realized what was happening about 200 yards after I left the dock.

Pulled back by a family in a pontoon.

The engine didn't cool off enough to replace the impeller until after dark.

Took a couple hours.

I just moved a couple weeks ago, so I didn't have the proper tools where I could find them.

Think the next one will be closer to one hour.

Not a fun job.

I look like I've been fighting with a bunch of house cats!

My arms are all scratched up.

At least I didn't have to pay somebody else to do it...

Well, my boat is still down.

The day after I replaced the impeller, I took it back to the lake.

Sounded better when first started, but after 200-300 yards, the exhaust got louder and it puffed gray smoke that smelled like burning plastic.

I killed it and got towed back to the dock.

When I pulled the pump the first time, at least 6 of the 8 impeller fins/vanes were detached, but still in the pump housing.

I guess #7 fell off when I was pulling it out.

I kept them all to prove to myself that no large pieces would block the screen.

I'm wondering if I did something stupid, such as put the inlet hose on the outlet side.

I'm taking it to a local Mercruiser dealer with a good rep.

If that's what I did, they can replace the impeller again and laugh at me.

I'll pay for the repairs this time and most likely will replace the impeller at the start of each season from now on.

The Mercruiser dealer acted surprised that I had a v-drive and told me he tried to avoid them.

That's all the reassurance I needed.

Took it the the local Supra/Moomba/Tige dealer.

They were glad to see me, but had to work me in.

They normally take care of Indmar engines.

They pulled the pump and told me the new impeller I had installed was still in great shape.

No blockage at the trans cooler.

They ran out of time because some scheduled appts showed up.

A few days later, were able to work on it a little more.

One of the exhaust hoses was soft from the heat damage.

It has been replaced now.

Still no answer on where the main problem is.

If I don't get it by this weekend, I'll go pay them for their time and try to find another Mercruiser dealer willing to work on it.

Power Boats in Hot Springs, AR offered.

They've been nice when I picked up parts.

Anybody local (or otherwise) know about them?

Looks like the Indmar dealer came through for me.

I got a call this afternoon.

They finished checking everything on the boat.

Told me a valve was turned off between the water pickup and the engine.

Said it was running fine.

They were warming up the oil so they could change it.

I'm supposed to pick it up some time Wednesday.

I never thought to look there.

Oops...

I'll give an update after I've picked up my boat.
