Strong gas/fuel smell coming from exhaust

Good morning all.

So while out yesterday on my 2008 centurion avalanche C4,  scorpion engine. It has a fresh air exhaust that goes down under water. I was wakesurfing and every time the boat would drive by I would get a strong fuel fumes smell. It was not there before. No visible leaks or fuel in bildge or sheen in water. I replaced fuel water separator and inline fuel filter at beginning of the year. Can they run rich or lean? Thanks
