Sewlong Bimini for Gladiator tower?

Recommended Posts

Mpod    2

Anyone have experience with the Sewlong Folding Canopy Top/bimini? I need a bimini for my '13 FX22 and like the simplicity of the design but they are a bit of an investment. $1550-1900 depending on options.

The OEM top runs about the same price if I don't add surfboard pockets to the sewlong. That said, i like the idea of storing surfboards on the bimini.

Any other suggestions?

Let me know how the pockets work. My gladiator Bimini seems to be at an angle that wouldn't really work for pockets. Have wanted to do the same tho

They will sew in pockets to any existing bimini. Talked to them last year and was pondering sending them mine over the winter. Decided to buy upper racks for now instead.

Sewlong is fantastic. The local dealer uses them for tops and covers instead of the factory versions.

I bought this top and it works well. I do have a complaint though - the way the top is left "open" on the sides (between the top and the side bars) makes it so when it rains all the water pours over the side and falls into the boat. You can see the defect (if you can really call it that) in the picture on the page you posted the link to. The lateral aluminum bar there stick out the side and the water drips between the sunbrella fabric and the bar. Right int he boat. I really wish it had a drip edge like other manufactured biminis. There area couple places where water pools on the top so you can't even push it up and drain it without putting it all in the boat.

Overall it's a great product, but that single problem annoys the pooh out of me. Luckily my boat is docked with a roof overhead 95% of the summer.

Forgot to add that before you put it on you'll want to buy some matching paint for the hose clamp things that connect it to your tower. I didn't paint mine so the chrome straps on my black tower stand out. I'm not going to paint it on my tower because it's not that big of a deal, but I could've spray painted those oscar the grouches in like 20 seconds if I'd thought ahead.

I am resurrecting this old thread.  For those of you that are still using these, what are your thoughts now?  By the way 2017 pricing is $1695 without and $1995 with the surf pockets

And maybe for those of you who have the factory bimini, what do you think about this?:

My concern is that I'm not sure it's any easier to take down and put up than the factory one.  Also, I have to lower my tower to fit into storage and I don't think this one would let me do that.  Further, I think the clamps are cheesy and I don't like the idea of drilling more holes into my tower.  Thoughts?

Best bimini on the market. Nothing cheesy about any of it. There's a reason why BoardCo and the local Nautique dealers outfit the boats the sell with Sewlong biminis rather than the factory versions.

Thanks for the responses guys.  Has anyone lowered their tower with one on?  This may be the deal breaker for me.  The quality does seem exceptional and it HAS to be easier to put up and take down than the factory one.

Well I just wanted to update this thread for future reference.  I called Sewlong again and spoke to someone over there who really seemed to know what he was talking about.  Very friendly also I must say.

Together we decided after much discussion that their bimini would not work in my situation because I lower my tower for storage after every outing and their bimini hangs off the back of the tower enough that it would be laying across my back seats making an indention.  The other option is to remove the bimini tubing every time and that is really not practical to do.

So for anyone considering this bimini who has to lower their tower for storage, this probably won't work.  I was bummed too as I am sick of the factory bimini but will just have to order a new one and make do.

I had Sewlong install 2 surfpockets on the top of my bimini (also made by Sewlong) last year and have been extremely happy with them.  Having the pockets is way more convenient than dealing with the bungee cord on the surf rack.

Sewlong is a good company and stands by their work.  I highly recommend them

Nate...thanks for the update....and great info for the future. .I am so grateful I don't have to lower my tower.....not sure if its the same on your boat but I cant lay it down because the NAV light would be taking the weight of the tower on the back seat.  I end up using vests etc to prop it up.  Terrible design miss.  Had to do it one year for winter storage...hopefully never again.

Yep, same with my boat Bongo.  I get around it by putting the swivel board racks down so that when I lower my tower they rest on the gunnels.  I then use heavy duty folded tarp that is about 4 inches thick to rest between racks and gunnels which puts my NAV light about an inch off of the vinyl.

Stinks too because my storage place is only about an inch too low.

I may start experimenting with ways to keep the tower up even higher.  I think it's worth it for this Sewlong bimini!  Fineline wants $2K for an OEM bimini by the way.   More than the Sewlong one!

I wonder if they sell just the surfboard pockets that someone could then have sewn onto their existing bimini?

you could buy a tower prop! i got 1 from great lakes (i think) its adjustable from about 2 feet to I'm guessing 3ft, i leave it on the bottom setting, with the prop the tower sits about 2ft above the rear ski pole in a 07 elite v c4. i also have to take the tower down to clear the garage door every time we go out and come back. I know our boats are probably laid out different but it may be an option.

This sounds perfect.  Any pics of it in action?
